If You Haven’t Used it in Two Years It’s Probably Time to Toss That Item Out
The issue that we most often face is that we own way more stuff than we have the storage for. Therefore our issue would be resolved the moment we learn how to not hang on to the stuff that we don’t need or don’t even use.
The two years old rule helps with that – whether it’s clothing, accessories, or home decor, anything that you haven’t used for two years has to be taken out of the house.
The less stuff you have, the easier it is to find the storage space and make the house look less cluttered. Minimalism is best when dealing with small spaces and the two year rule is one of my all-time favorite storage hacks.
Shower Curtain Rods Hold a Lot More Than Just the Curtain
Shower curtain rods are much more useful than we give them credit for. They can be used to hang almost anything that you want.
Whether you hang scarves, belts, or other articles of clothing, shower curtain rods can be used to add another section to a closet or dressing room space. They are inexpensive yet are useful in so many ways.
Baskets are There to Keep Your Clutter Out of Sight
Baskets or cloth storage bins are probably one of the best and one of my favorite storage hacks because they can store a ton of stuff AND they can be part of the decor of the room. They are also cheaper than many other organizers and they come in so many colors and styles that they can easily beautify a room.
Find some cute baskets or bins in various sizes that you can use in different rooms in the house.
You can store cords, make-up, accessories, clothing, and anything else that you don’t want your guests to see when they come to your house. So definitely invest in some that go well with the decor in each room of your home.
I utilize inexpensive 6 cube organizer shelves from Target and put pretty fabric cube bins on the inside of a few of the spaces and books on the other and it adds such a great touch of color to the room and provides storage not only for my books but the bins hide my not-so-attractive notebooks, phone chargers, games, etc.
Find Furniture That Has Storage Options
Hidden storage is your best friend – it’s something that enables you to have more space where you can keep your things and organize them more efficiently.
These days, it’s easy to find furniture like beds, sofas, etc., that come with built-in storage that you can use. These furniture options make it easier for you to use up the same space to store things that you don’t use as much in your daily life or don’t have the space for in your closets.
My bed has two drawers at the foot so I use those to store my sheets and pillowcases and that frees up space in my linen cabinets! Many ottomans have a top that lifts up so you can store blankets for those cold fall and winter evenings watching tv. You can find couches with cup holders and armrests that lift up so you can easily hide those remotes, game controllers and books you might want to curl up with later on!
This frees up space on your coffee table or end table AND keeps those things out of sight when guests come over!

Try Hanging Storage Options to Use Vertical Space
Hanging organizers aren’t exactly new, but very few people think of investing in them. In reality, these options can make it much easier for you to keep the floor clean, the closet less cluttered and use empty walls and the back of doors for storage.
If you search online, you can find plenty of cute options (you can use the shoe organizers to store other household stuff as well…this is great for bathrooms) that you can also use for storing things on the closet walls, bathroom walls, etc. You can even find some that are aesthetic and provide different amounts of storage based on your needs.
Today, the options are endless when it comes to style so you can easily fit the decor of a room.
Storage Shelves and Hooks Can Substitute for a Closet or Cabinet
As we have already discussed, one of the best storage hacks is to make the most out of all the vertical space you have around the house. This is really useful if you don’t have a proper closet. Your walls could come in handy to comfortably store some of your belongings.
Shelving on the wall does make a difference if you use it correctly to store daily necessities like clothes, jewelry, bags, etc.
Hooks can also keep your clothes from being folded and ruined by being in boxes for a long time just by using them with decorative hangers.
Shelving definitely makes it easier for you to make the most out of the space you have.
Have Different Types of Storage Options
Some people think that they should have the same kind of storage units in every room in the house, but that’s not the case. Having different options makes it simple for you to find room for literally anything that you need to store or keep safe.
Whether you have cabinets, drawers, storage bins, or shelves, you should have a couple of options to play around with and figure out what works best to store various items.
That doesn’t mean you have to spend money on EVERY type of storage that is available in the market, but at least keep some variety to make the task of organizing easier.
And don’t limit yourself to the “prescribed” use for an item. For instance, a lazy susan for a spice cabinet might make a great makeup table accessory to keep things like foundation or moisturizers easy to grab.
You can use layered nail polish shelving for desks to store things like…well…nail polish. Get creative and experiment based on the space you have and what you need to store.
Every Empty Space in the House Can Be Storage Space
Make use of empty spaces wisely. Many times we have more empty space than we think…we just need to look at it in creative ways.
The space behind doors, beneath shelves, on the top of the cupboard, etc are some great examples.
You don’t have to stuff unnecessary things in every corner, but you can make sure that every place in your small space is used to its full advantage to store the things you have efficiently.
Be inventive about the kind of storage you choose and where you decide to put it to make the most out of every corner of the house.
And that’s all for our list storage hacks that can help you become an even better organizer!
We hope that these storage hacks make it easier for you and your family to hang on to some of the things you love without them taking over your home!
